TurnItIn.com

(updated December 31, 2008)

In the 2003-2004, academic year, the laboratory staff detected 42 plagiarized laboratory reports. In an effort to ensure fairness, we are evaluating a plagiarism prevention service, TurnItIn.com, for the labs this year. You must submit your laboratory reports for Labs 2,3, and 6 to this site by logging into http://www.TurnItIn.com. Your Class ID is listed below, and your TA will tell you the password during Lab 2.

You agree that by taking this course, all required lab reports or other assignments submitted for credit may be submitted to TurnItIn.com or similar third parties to review and evaluate for originality and intellectual integrity and that if the results of such a review support an allegation of academic dishonesty, the course work in question as well as any supporting materials may be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies for investigation and further action. A description of the services, terms and conditions of use, and privacy policy of TurnItIn.com is available on its web site: http://www.TurnItIn.com. Understand that all work submitted to TurnItIn.com will be added to its database of papers.

There are many training manuals and videos at http://www.turnitin.com/static/new_tii_training.html.  Please refer to them in order for you to set up an account and be able to submit your papers throughout the semester.

Each student (not the TA) is responsible for verifying that any electronic submissions to TurnItIn.com are processed within 24 hours.   This is verified by receipt of a "plagiarism report" email to the student from TurnItIn.com.  Each student is personally responsible for maintaining a record of the time and date of every submission to TurnItIn.com in their laboratory notebook.  Each student is personally responsible to maintain and being able to produce on demand a permanent record of every "plagiarism report" email from TurnItIn.com to verify that the submission of each lab report has been properly processed by TurnItIn.com.  Any student who does not receive a "plagiarism report" within 24 hours of submission of their lab to TurnItIn.com must do two things: (1) they must notify their TA that they have not received a "plagiarism report" (they must also indicate to their TA the exact time and date that the submission to TurnItIn.com was attempted) and (2) they must submit their report electronically as an email attachment directly to their TA. These two steps must be done within 36 hours of the original submission deadline to TurnItIn.com.

DUE DATES: Your submission to TurnItIn.com is due within 48 hours of the deadline for your hard-copy report. Late submissions will be accepted with a 5 point penalty for one week following the original hard-copy due date. These should be sent to the 'Late Submissions' lab account set up for each section.  Failiure to submit a report to TurnItIn will result in a zero on that reportPapers submitted more than one week late to TurnItIn.com from the due date of the hard copy will earn a score of zero for the report.

Do not submit your document more than once. If you discover after you submit that you submitted to the wrong section or under the wrong student name, contact your TA and tell him or her which section/student you submitted under.
